We have all been there. You want to see what your ex (or your boss, or that frenemy from college) posted on their WhatsApp Status. But you definitely do not want your name popping up in their “Viewed By” list. That is social suicide.
If you search for this online, you will find a hundred spammy articles telling you to download “Status Saver Pro 2026.” Stop. Do not download random apps. They are usually malware in a trench coat.
You can actually do this right now, using settings already on your phone. I do this all the time. (Don’t judge me).
Here are the only two ways that actually work.
Method 1: The “Read Receipts” Toggle (The Easy Way)
This is the classic trick. It works on iPhone and Android. WhatsApp has a rule: If you don’t let people see when you read their texts, they can’t see when you view their Status.
It’s a fair trade.
How to do it:

Open WhatsApp.

Go to Settings > Privacy.

Turn OFF the toggle for “Read Receipts.”
Now, go view their status. You are invisible. You are a ghost. They will never know you were there.
The Catch (and it’s a big one): As long as this setting is off, you can’t see who views your status either. It cuts both ways.

The Rookie Mistake: People view the status, panic, and turn Read Receipts back ON immediately.

Don’t do that. If you turn it back on before their status expires (24 hours), WhatsApp might sync the data and retroactively show your name.

The Fix: Keep it off for 24 hours until that specific status is gone forever. Then you are safe.
Method 2: The “File Manager” Hack (Android Only)
Okay, iPhone users, you can stop reading here. This one is for the Android crowd. This is the “nuclear option.” It lets you see the photo or video without even opening WhatsApp.
Here is the technical secret: When your phone downloads a Status update, it saves a copy in a hidden folder on your phone before you even click on it.
How to find the stash:

Open the “My Files” or “File Manager” app on your Samsung/Pixel/OnePlus.

Go to Settings inside that app and turn on “Show Hidden Files.” (This is crucial. If you don’t do this, you won’t see anything).

Navigate to this folder path:
Internal Storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > .Statuses
Boom. Every single status from your contacts is sitting right there as a regular .jpg or .mp4 file. You can open them. You can watch them. You can zoom in. And because you are opening them from your file manager not WhatsApp the “Viewed” trigger never fires.
You just beat the system.
Method 3: What if You Are Blocked?
I get this question a lot. “Rahul, can I see their status if they blocked me?”
No. Stop trying. If you are blocked, the connection is cut. Your phone never downloads the status in the background, so the File Manager trick won’t work either.
If you really, really need to see it, ask a mutual friend to send you a screenshot. That is your only option. (Or just move on. Seriously, it’s probably just a picture of their lunch anyway).
The Bottom Line: Use the Read Receipt trick for quick snooping. Use the File Manager trick if you want to save the photo without them knowing. And please, delete those “Status Saver” apps. They are stealing your data.
